I was talking to someone yesterday about poets using prompts to generate poems. He said, "You will always go to the prompt and try to write for the prompt, it is better to just generate poetry." Naturally I disagreed because I think that a prompt can teach you about your writing, it still generates a poem, and in many cases they can make you a better writer.
What do others think? Are prompts a crutch for people? How do you approach them?

Responding to a prompt is gracious acceptance of another's gift of a subject for discourse. A prompt doesn't tell you where to go. It only tells you where to start. The "crutch person" uses prompts. too.
I agree.
Prompts are tricky. They were for me, in particular, because I am a stubborn Greek girl and I was surrounded with prompts in my MFA program (some were "loose" prompts--imitate what this poet is doing in this poem, borrow something from structure, write about heaven and make it a metaphor, etc.--and others, in one workshop in particular, were VERY particular and nitpicky). When I wrote *for the prompt* and nothing more, I got lost inside it. When I wrote for the prompt to spark something, but did not feel wedded either to the prompt or--well--"the ways I normally write", I wound up with a draft of something that had some details, or images, or phrasings that were just different enough from the usual to expand my voice and style. Then I would edit and revise and re-draft and re-envision this beast in front of me.
I am 5 years out of my MFA program. I have created my own prompt-like things in the past to jumpstart my writing when either I had not written in a while OR when I needed to find a path to clarity so that I could 1. honor the abstract, huge quagmire of crap in my head and 2. get something down on paper that could be a good starting point.
I am about to enter a PhD program. Who knows what will happen, what challenges and ideas I will be presented with in my workshops! Whatever they may be, I say BRING IT--prompt or no prompt! :)
I like prompts. In fact, please send me two or three, but no monster prompts.
